THE AGE OF REVOLUTIONS

(Also a comment to the book "THE AGE OF REVOLUTIONS" by Fareed Zakaria, known from CNN. But 22.01.2023 Fareed Zakaria on CNN mentions "anarchy", in the meaning of ochlarchy including chaos, and gets a Brown Card.)

Clarification of the term Revolution in connection with the Economic-Political map (EP map) - and GGS, GAIAN & GRETA THUNBERG and more. Every shift in the coordinates of an economic-political system on the EP map is by definition a revolution. Revolutions can be of varying sizes, some small, and sometimes somewhat larger. Revolution stands in opposition to reform, which is economic-political changes without a shift in the system coordinates, i.e. changes within the system's framework, without going beyond these. Each shift in the coordinates of an economic-political system on the EP map almost always takes place in a continuous process via infinitesimal shifts in the system coordinates, which are dynamically integrated over time, to a significant overall shift in the system coordinates, i.e. to a significant revolution. NB! A series of insignificant revolutions can thus result after a while, in an overall significant revolution. If the revolution is a downward movement on the EP map, it is also called a counter-revolution. Revolutions can also occur by discontinuous, possibly large - shifts in the system coordinates, without us going into this here, beyond noting that such often go terribly wrong, most often due to lack of relevant follow-up organizational structures. GGS, The Green Global Spring Revolution, among others supported by GAIAN Freedomly Zen Buddhists, other libertarians, Greta Thunberg & Co and more, do not pursue this terribly wrong strategy. But on the scheme mentioned under "NB!" above, which probably will be a success, provided the triggering of sufficient crowds to support the scheme (of GGS). And it must happen in due time to avert a full blown climate crisis, with Ragnarokk = FULL HELL ON GAIA, A.K.A. TELLUS AND THE EARTH.

MIDTERM ELECTIONS 2022

The 2022 United States elections will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2022. During this midterm election year, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate will be contested. Putin’s war vs. Ukraine and the West

The West and UK are just getting over a lengthy mourning period for Queen Elizabeth II, and saying goodbye to the longest reigning monarch in British history. The anarchists called for Repubic in the UK. Perhaps Vladimir Putin waited, as a mark of respect, before he addressed the Russian people to give them the next phase of his plans for his ‘special military operation’, i.e. war against Ukraine. It was hard to witness his drive in the streets of London in an open-topped limousine smiling, beside the Queen, some twenty years ago! Relationships with Russia have certainly soured since then.

About that time also, 2003, there was a high-level meeting held of those of Putin’s inner circle in which there was a chance to adopt a more open democratic line, albeit Russian style, the perestroika of Mikhail Gorbachov, or alternatively follow the well-trodden path which secured the position of the favoured few within a strict authoritarian government, perhaps better termed a kleptarchy. The latter was opted for, which made the few extremely wealthy, e.g. the oligarchs who had a hold on the key state industries from the 1990s and Putin and members with upper KGB, now FSB, affiliations. Today Putin who is recently 70, is reputed to be worth some $40bn, and has an unreasonable embedded hatred of the west which isn’t going to change. It will get worse as his position is increasingly threatened.

There was a fairly recent meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), which includes China, Russia, India, Turkey and others. Putin used the occasion to put his case, as he saw it, and subsequently visited Saudi Arabia, and the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, and Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. He was advised to bring the war to an end in each case. Overall, he received a cool reception.

Instead, he has dismissed that advice and chosen to illegally grab the eastern and southern flanks of Ukraine – Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson. This he has done now on paper at least, much as he stole Crimea in 2014. He has no compunction about lying; it is his way of life. He now broadcasts worldwide and holds a televised ceremony, that these four parts of Ukraine are now a part of mother Russia, and Ukraine continuing attacks on those 4 provinces would be seen as attacks on Russian soil. But he only has a self-proclaimed mandate for this and most of the world, from the UN down, included the Anarchist International AI/IFA, pronounce the move as illegal.

However, Ukraine won’t stop its endeavours as it has slowly been taking its land back, gaining territory, particularly in Donetsk and latterly towards Kherson. They rightly believe that the land is Ukrainian and not Russian. In the past few days, the Ukrainians have been making steady progress, which has led to the pronouncement again that Russia will take all the land within the four provincial boundaries, which it has illegally claimed, as the “successful’” outcome of «the special military operation». The Russians/Putin claim it now belongs to Russia.

The Ukrainians will continue, however, and the war looks as if it will intensify, if the Russians are to try to make good on their pronouncement. The Russians have to regroup and significantly increase their numbers in order to not only halt the Ukrainian advance but to reverse the progress of the war. Their attempts to recruit prisoners, some criminal and others political, and the untrained populace to provide new troops is decidedly questionable. The population has been fleeing the country in droves.

This is where the future with a long war beckoning becomes worrying, because Putin has more than once stated that he would use tactical nuclear weapons, against all-nation protocols that negate such a move. In trying to decide his actions-- will he or won’t he? - one has to study the man. In his boyhood, he was known to watch rats on the stairwell of his apartment and what happened to them if they became cornered.

He may feel sometimes that the situation is becoming so serious, that he must lash out and fight, no holds barred. That may happen in the next month or two and he will feel that he must use the nuclear option and proceed accordingly. The rules of engagement will have totally changed and such an escalation will have to bring a response. What will it be? No one knows! There is no sign yet that there is sufficient of an opposition in the Duma to bring in a leadership with some sanity. Thus the future of Ukraine and the West looks grim! By IIFOR 11.10.2022.

OPEN LETTER ON THE NOVEMBER 3, 2020 ELECTION

Dear Fellow. As Election Day 2020 approaches, several crises are wreaking havoc across the country USA. The Corona-pandemic that has taken more than a million lives across the globe has triggered an economic crisis that will deepen, not resolve, in the months ahead. The consequences of manmade global warming are manifesting more and more acutely. Political polarization continues to escalate, with protesters who are demanding racial justice facing violence both from police and white supremacists, egged on by Donald Trump. And the blows are falling hardest on Black people, others of color, women, and poor people, as they usually do.

In this election, we as always promote the “lesser evil” argument. The rationale is that Trump is just too dangerous to do anything other than vote for his Democratic Party opponent. The same case was made when the authoritarian Nixon ran, and Reagan, and the Bushes senior and junior. The nationalist-fascist Donald Trump is even more openly and crassly pushing the supremacy of the wealthy white elite than his authoritarian predecessors. The General Services Administration has informed President-elect Joe Biden that the Trump administration is ready to begin the formal transition process, according to a letter from Administrator Emily Murphy sent Monday afternoon and obtained by CNN. The letter is the first step the administration has taken to acknowledge President Donald Trump's defeat, more than two weeks after Biden was declared the winner in the election.Murphy said she had not been pressured by the White House to delay the formal transition and did not make a decision "out of fear or favoritism.""Please know that I came to my decision independently, based on the law and available facts," Murphy wrote. "I was never directly or indirectly pressured by any Executive Branch official -- including those who work at the White House or GSA -- with regard to the substance or timing of my decision. To be clear, I did not receive any direction to delay my determination." The letter marks Murphy's formal sign off on Biden's victory, a normally perfunctory process known as ascertainment. But until now, Murphy had refused to move forward with the ascertainment process, despite Biden's clear victory. Murphy, a Trump political appointee, has faced intense scrutiny and political pressure from Democrats and, in recent days, Republicans calling for the start of a smooth transition. In a statement Monday, Sen. Rob Portman, an Ohio Republican, said that "there is no evidence as of now of any widespread fraud or irregularities that would change the result in any state" and called on the transition process to begin.

Joe diGenova, an attorney for Trump's campaign, said during an appearance on "The Howie Carr Show": "Anybody who thinks the election went well, like that idiot Krebs who used to be the head of cybersecurity. That guy is a class A moron. He should be drawn and quartered. Taken out at dawn and shot." - Georgia's Republican lieutenant governor on Tuesday 01.12.2020 joined a growing list of GOP officials in the state who are publicly rejecting President Donald Trump's baseless claims of voter fraud, saying the misinformation spread by the President and his allies is "alarming" and could jeopardize the party in upcoming Senate runoff elections.

Federal career employees across the Trump administration are fearful of losing their job protections and potentially their jobs, as agencies begin to implement a recent executive order signed by President Donald Trump. "This is an attempt to sabotage on their way out the door," said Richard Loeb, senior policy counsel at the American Federation of Government Employees.

Chris Cilliza reports on CNN: there have been a lot of low moments for democracy over the past four years, but none that reached quite as low as what happened on Wednesday 02.12.2020 afternoon: The release of a 46-minute rant by the President of the United States aimed at undermining the election results. I'm not going to reproduce any of the myriad lies and conspiracy theories Trump leaned on in the address, which he opened by grandiosely declaring "this may be the most important speech I've ever made," because, well, that's exactly what the outgoing President wants. He wants the media to report on what he said and, in effect, launder the lies so that they come out looking somehow new or more relevant. (And some media outlets will do just that! Conservative stations and publications will cover this speech like a legitimate presidential address, repeating the debunked junk coming out of the President's mouth like it is actually up for debate.)

What Trump is doing here has moved beyond laughable or embarrassing. It is now into the downright dangerous phase. Unlike in the days immediately following the election when the outcome was genuinely in doubt -- or even the week or so after the election was called for President-elect Joe Biden when Trump and his team had a number of lawsuits in swing states pending -- there is now zero doubt about who won on November 3 2020. The record of Trump's legal team in the many, many cases they have filed around the country would make the New York Jets blush. The chief law enforcement officer in the country has acknowledged that "to date, we have not seen fraud on a scale that could have effected a different outcome in the election." The Biden transition is picking up steam. In short: This thing is all over but the shouting. There's no there there when it comes to all of the legal challenges and conspiracy theories that the President and his ever-dwindling group of loyalists are pushing...

We simply cannot allow an outgoing president to make things up about the election results without any pushback from those in his party who know he is wrong. A defensive crouch has been the default position of establishment Republicans for the last four years. And we can look around the country and see the damage done -- and the cost in human lives. Now is the time for Republicans to speak out because, if they wait much longer it will be too late. Endangering the pillars of our democracy for purely selfish reasons -- and using the prestige and power of the presidency to do it -- isn't something that can be allowed in a healthy republic. No matter how afraid of the President's Twitter feed you might be.

(CNN) President Donald Trump expanded his extraordinary efforts to overturn the election Saturday 05.12.2020, attempting to pressure Georgia's governor to force a special session of the legislature to change the result, while using an evening rally for two GOP Senate candidates to rant about his own grievances and thrash Republican leaders who have not done his bidding. It was more evidence that the President will spend the remaining days of his presidency ignoring the deadly course of the pandemic, spreading falsehoods that amount to an attack on democracy and nursing his own grudges even if that works against the interests of his own party. The purpose of Trump's visit to Valdosta was to support Sens. David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler in January's Senate runoffs that will determine control of the US Senate. Trump's relentless claims of voter fraud in Georgia have alarmed many GOP leaders who fear they may lead many Republican voters to stay home.

But in his seemingly endless narcissism, Trump found it difficult to keep the focus on Loeffler and Perdue, repeatedly turning back to his own complaints and made only passing references to the alarming rise in Covid-19 cases nationally at a rally where almost no one wore masks and there was no social distancing. He made up fantastical stories about votes in suitcases, re-litigated his election tallies in battleground states and suggested that he will be successful in reversing the November results where President-elect Joe Biden beat him with 306 electoral votes to Trump's 232. "We will still win it," he said, even though there is no means for him to do so. There is no evidence of widespread voter fraud and many states have already certified their results as the vast majority of Trump's baseless legal challenges go down in defeat, meaning that he is merely trying to delay the inevitable as he fights Biden's ascent to the White House. During the Georgia speech, which included a video showcasing his fake claims about election fraud, he alternated between freewheeling lines and his teleprompter script -- doing further harm to his party by inaccurately claiming that Georgia's election system is fraudulent. NB! The voter registration deadline is Monday 07.12.2020 and early voting begins December 14.

"This election was rigged and we can't let it happen to two of the greatest, most respected people in Washington," he said, pointing to Loeffler and Perdue. "We can't let it happen again. How the totalitarians wage war on the truth

Live streamed video of the D.C. Capitol being stormed on January 6 brought viewers worldwide into the moment that internet conspiracy theories exploded in real life. This futile attempt to block Biden from being confirmed was fueled by the false but ferociously repeated tale that votes were stolen and Trump illegitimately denied a second term. That cover transforms lawless rioters into “patriotic heroes.” Commentators claimed to be shocked when the calls for a show of force “like Bunker Hill” — circulated on the web for weeks by pro-Trump extremists — came to life. And they appeared mystified that masses of people could be launched into action by claims and “alt-facts” that have no evidence or basis in reality. In fact, there is a continuous chain stretching over decades that ties mainstream news, link by link, to the remote reaches of dark web white supremacy boards, anti-Semitic memes and fascistic plotting.

A brief history of “Fake News.” Journalism in the US, like other democratic countries, is supposedly held to the standard of objectivity and even-handedness. In reality, exaggerated, sensationalized or outright lying for capitalism and statism has been around for a long time. So, too, has selective presentation and editorial slanting by the wealthy owners of media outlets and their advertisers as well statist propaganda. Information, like other commodities, is controlled by cash & power.

In the US, the Reagan years proved a critical turning point in cracking the veneer of media impartiality. Three events are particularly interesting. The Koch brothers, intending to re-shape US politics, began building a network of right-wing, arch-conservative liberalist and fascistoid think tanks, organizations and bought politicians. Fox News was founded in 1986 — initially the cutting edge of arch-conservative politics but now eclipsed by Breitbart and others farther to the fascist right. And months later, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) threw out its Fairness Doctrine requiring airwaves reporting to cover multiple perspectives.

A slow slide since the 1980s morphed into a journalistic sea change. The term “Fake News” emerged during the 2016 election, largely as Donald Trump’s iteration of a common conservative complaint that the “liberal” media is unfair to them. But who’s doing the faking?An independent study by the Nieman Foundation for Journalism analyzed 429 “hyper-partisan media sites.” Of these, only 8 — or less than 2% — were leftist-leaning.

As print media declined and many small newspapers went belly up, hundreds of online sites purporting to be local news outlets popped up. One stand-out is TV reporter turned internet entrepreneur Brian Timpone. He is linked to multiple interconnected media companies, including Government Information Services, Locality Labs, and others. Combined, they control nearly 1,300 websites scattered across all 50 states. All cater to fascist and right-leaning politicians, lobbyists and PACs (Political Action Committees), often printing their press releases word-for-word. Such networks serve the billionaire-funded propaganda mills, capitalist and statist. Linked up with social media, they become a massive echo chamber. The power of social media to magnify is immense and growing astronomically. Axios reported that online response to sketchy news sources shot up from 0.7 billion in 2019 to 2.8 billion in tumultuous 2020.

The liberal capitalist and statist media fail. Throughout the four-year rule by the Liar-in-Chief Donald Trump, liberal capitalist and statist commentators have counted falsehoods and done daily fact checks. It hasn’t worked much. Still less does citing evidence and reason stem the tide of conspiracy theories. How can one prove to a QAnon zealot that the world’s elite do not secretly rape and eat children? Another unsuccessful ploy is appealing to morality, fairness and decency. Joe Biden’s message to the Capitol mob was outrage at the violation of the “sacred” halls of democracy. Completely ineffectual to those who believe they are defending the “real” winner of the election, speaking for the “shat-upon little guy, and saving the children”. This is the mantle the right-wing ultra-fascist and arch-conservative liberalist propaganda machine has woven.

The far right, ultra-fascist and arch-conservative liberalist media, has a massive advantage over the others when it comes to getting its message out. First, of course, they have immense amounts of money from the über-wealthy. But even more fundamentally: they don’t have to tell the truth. Writing in Mein Kampf, Adolf Hitler laid out the basics of extreme right-wing messaging: “Propaganda must not investigate the truth objectively … it must present only that aspect of the truth which is favorable to its own side.” The right wing doesn’t have to be factual or even logically consistent. What it must do is speak to the passions and desperation of the masses. Its key purpose is to identify a target, a scapegoat to deflect their fury and frustration away from the true statist and/or capitalist causes and to ordain a strongman savior. Also the red-brown extremists to the left lies, included Trotskyites and other communists, all of the time…

The liberal social democrats, i.e. anarchists, has a job that is both harder and easier. Harder because its purpose is to empower the People to challenge the entrenched ruling class, i.e. private & public Bureaucracy broadly defined, and be able to regenerate the entire social system to one that is humane and genuinely, real democratic. And to do that, liberal social democrats have to not only arouse passion, but also arm workers and the most oppressed with an understanding of how the system works, and what must be done to bring it down and replace it with real, i.e. always including green and pro climate, democracy. What makes the job easier is that unlike fascism and other totalitarian ideologies, which rest on venomous, unsustainable fictions, the path toward real democracy is rooted in reality and genuine non-authoritarian, included non-corrupt - strength, both economically and political/administrative. For liberal social democrats and allies, the justice sought and the means to get there are completely entwined. Tell the truth. Over and over again, especially about the Law of Corruption that explains why strongmen always are the Enemies of the People.

PS. Clarification of the term Revolution in connection with the Economic-Political map (EP map) - and GGS, GAIAN & GRETA THUNBERG and more. Every shift in the coordinates of an economic-political system on the EP map is by definition a revolution. Revolutions can be of varying sizes, some small, and sometimes somewhat larger. Revolution stands in opposition to reform, which is economic-political changes without a shift in the system coordinates, i.e. changes within the system's framework, without going beyond these. Each shift in the coordinates of an economic-political system on the EP map almost always takes place in a continuous process via infinitesimal shifts in the system coordinates, which are dynamically integrated over time, to a significant overall shift in the system coordinates, i.e. to a significant revolution. NB! A series of insignificant revolutions can thus result after a while, in an overall significant revolution. If the revolution is a downward movement on the EP map, it is also called a counter-revolution. Revolutions can also occur by discontinuous, possibly large - shifts in the system coordinates, without us going into this here, beyond noting that such often go terribly wrong, most often due to lack of relevant follow-up organizational structures. A majority of senators - 57 to 43, including seven Republicans - voted to convict Mr. Trump, 10 votes short of the 67 required for conviction. After his acquittal, Mr. Trump released a statement denouncing the trial as "the greatest witch hunt in history". This was Mr. Trump's second impeachment. 14.08.2022. An anarchist take on the January 6 hearings and the failed fascist-led coup.

When rioters broke into the Capitol building, people were glued to their screens, mesmerized by the sheer enormity of the action happening. January 6, 2021, will live in infamy as the day that a mob of fascists and their friends tried their damnedest to wrest control of the US Congress.

Fast forward a year and a half later, and it’s all being relived, in technicolor glory, thanks to the bipartisan House of Representatives committee investigating the coup. As of this writing in mid-August 2022, there have been seven hearings, with some explosive revelations.

Uncommon honesty. As an anarchist, I did not expect to be surprised by the hearings. But my assumption was shaken by how blasé the powers-that-be were over the attempted overthrow of the elected government. Multiple people testified that Trump and his inner circle knew he lost the election; Trump just did not care. He put out a not-so-subtle call to his white supremacist, nazi and far-right fascist followers, and they responded with plans and weapons.

From where I sit, it took Cassidy Hutchinson to blow the whole thing open. Her testimony was riveting. She made it clear that Trump’s people knew exactly what was happening and that The Donald planned to stride into the Capitol like a conquering hero. She did what many of those in the know were too spineless or supportive to do. She stood up to the bullying and told the truth. In a CNN interview, former White house communications director Alyssa Farah Griffin backed Hutchinson, saying that Chief of Staff Mark Meadows (Hutchinson’s boss) suggested Griffin stay on the job because Trump would not be leaving office.

The «usefulness» of fascism. The hearings made it abundantly clear that the veneer of US democracy is razor thin; the People have little to no real control over those who rule them, the Bureaucracy, economic and political/administrative, the upper class.

What we have is state and capitalist «democracy», which provides the illusion that people have a real say in the government just through voting. But it’s a rigged game, in which only Republicans and Democrats de facto can get on the ballot. And since politicians on both sides of the aisle protect business and monied & state interests, vertical organization economically and political/administrative, the needs and wishes of The Grassroots = The People, are left in the dust.

But even this “choice” between these two parties may be too much in these precarious and socially volatile times. And that is why the ruling class, the Bureaucracy economic and political/administrative tolerates the existence of fascist groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers (notwithstanding the handwringing at the hearings).

The capitalists and statists may need these goons when the next recession hits and brings with it misery for the People, the working class — on top of already unaffordable housing, rents, food, medicine and basic life requirements.

To come to power, fascism must build a mass movement to smash working-class organizations like unions; strip rights and humanity from religious, sexual and ethnic minorities; and reduce women to second-class citizenship. Their way is paved by the bigotry and suspicion that already exists, against immigrants, the LGBTQ+ community, single moms, “greedy” public workers, women and people of color blamed for “taking jobs” from white men, tree-hugging climate activists, leftists and anarchists, and so on.

True democracy for the majority. The January 6 investigation is generating a tsunami of analysis, and much of it is crap. By and large, it promotes the idea that Trump and his minions threatened a precious democracy. In reality, that exists for most US residents only as a fantasy.

So what’s the alternative to the mess that the collapse of moderate capitalism and statism is creating, with its drastic last resort of fascism?

I see anarchism, horizontal organization, as that alternative. I want to live in a world where workers and people who are currently marginalized have not only a voice but significant influence on the decisions. Where we can make sure that the issues important to most of us — things like civil rights, peace, freedom of movement, climate security, health, and basic human rights — are addressed in a sane and sustainable way.

To me, the key takeaway of the hearings is that state & capitalist «democracy» will never be safe from the threat of fascism and it will never be enough for the world’s People. What we need to win is the People’s democracy, horizontal organization, a bottom – up approach, significant.

21.09.2022. In USA, when adjusted for inflation, worker pay is actually falling, and is lower than before the pandemic — 3.6% lower than if it had followed pre-pandemic trends. Pundits are asking, “Is the economy in recession?” Regardless of definitions, working people are hurting, with pandemic aid programs evaporating and inflation eroding wages. Big business uses the threat of recession to its advantage, pleading for public handouts to bolster profits, or as now, encouraging a downturn in order to neutralize growing worker power by increasing unemployment.

Current conditions in the US economy are not normally found in a recession. Corporate profits are surging, and inflation is at near record levels. Lingering supply-demand imbalances are unique to the pandemic. There’s a tight labor market and workers have gained some leverage in the last 18 months or so due to their own increased militancy.

A recession, crisis, by any other name: There is no objective definition of an economic “recession,” so it must be one of those things that you “know it if you see it.” The National Bureau of Economic Research “Business Cycle Dating Committee” says that a recession is a “significant decline of economic activity that is spread across the economy and lasts for more than a few months.” The unstated definition however is whether corporate profits are falling. According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), a division of the US Department of Commerce, the “real GDP” (gross domestic product, one measure of economic output) decreased by 0.9% in the second quarter of 2022, following a 1.6% decline in the first quarter. That is two consecutive quarters of decline. But they were preceded by six consecutive quarters of increase in a schizophrenic, unprecedented pandemic-driven economy. It’s hard to know if these short-term statistics represent a real problem or are just an anomaly.

Here is the real stuff. As of June, inflation has driven consumer prices up by 9.1% from a year ago, while wages, although up significantly for some, increased only 5.2% overall. Inflation may be easing, with consumer prices no higher in July than June, but it has still caused real wages (wages compared to inflation) to decline. This is not just a pandemic hangover; real income for most workers has been falling for decades. And yet the Federal Reserve has raised interest rates 2.25 percentage points in the last six months, from near zero at the beginning of the year. The pretext is that the economy is overheating, so higher interest rates will throw some cold water on it. The problem with this storyline is that the causes of inflation are supply-demand mismatches and prolonged factory shutdowns in key manufacturing regions left over from the pandemic, global events such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine, natural disasters that disrupted production, and price gouging by corporations. Raising interest rates won’t impact any of these problems.

What it will do is further drain an already beleaguered working class by increasing the cost of credit card balances, mortgages, and auto loans. As if buying a house wasn’t already unattainable for most. Help isn’t “on the way” for US workers (or those anywhere for that matter), and conditions are only getting worse. Capitalists are giddy about interest rate hikes slowing the economy, increasing unemployment, dampening wage growth and, most importantly, undercutting any leverage the working class has gained in the last few years. The idea that US labor, less than 11% of which is unionized, will continue to push back on capitalists is simply unacceptable to them. A leaked internal memo from a Bank of America head of economic research stated this in stark, but clinical, terms. Among other nefarious things, it said the bank hoped that unemployment would rise, so that business could return to its idea of “normal,” and praised the Fed for finally supporting this cause with interest rate hikes. Whether those who create most of the wealth — workers — will go along with this game plan, or continue to be “uppity” remains to be seen. Source: AIIS.

The degree of socialism is dependent of economic equality and freedom, again indicated with efficiency of the system. The gini index is an indicator for capitalism vs. socialism. A gini index above 35 indicates capitalism, a gini index below 35 indecates socialism. In addition to this a high and somewhat increasing GDP per capita measured in constant prices, contributes to socialism, as an indicator of efficiency. Equality contributes far more than efficiency in estimating the degree of socialism vs. capitalism.

Gini indexes for USA; 2019: 41.5, 2017: 41.2, 2016: 41.1; 2015: 41.2, 2003-7: 40.8. A very small increase. The GDP per capita in constant prices has increased a bit from 2003-7 to 2017-19. Thus, all in all, there is no significant change in the degree of capitalism vs. socialism, in USA. The degree of autonomy vs. statism has not increased significantly either. Thus, there has not been a significant change in libertarian vs authoritarian degree, and capitalism vs socialism and autonomy vs. statism in the USA since 2003-7 see the table above. The USA’s system is stable, as a significant capitalist and autonomous system, i.e. a conservative liberalist system. The degree of democracy has not changed significantly. The ultra-authoritarian reactionary arch-conservative US Supreme Court assails tribal sovereignty

The June 29, 2022, US Supreme Court decision in Oklahoma v. Castro-Huerta gave the state of Oklahoma jurisdiction over non-Native crimes against Natives in Indian Country. This decision is the latest step in challenging tribal authority in order to gain control of tribal peoples, lands and resources.

“To put it bluntly, this decision is an act of conquest,” countered Gregory Ablavsky and Elizabeth Hidalgo Reese in their Washington Post editorial. “And it could signal a sea change in federal Indian law, ushering in a new era governed by selective ignorance of history and deference to state power.”

Legal battles galore. In 2015, Oklahoma convicted Manuel Castro-Huerta (a non-Native) of neglecting his blind, developmentally disabled Cherokee stepdaughter. While the defendant’s appeal worked its way through the courts, the US Supreme Court in another case, McGirt v. Oklahoma, upheld in 2020 that most of the eastern half of Oklahoma is Indian Territory. Only federal and tribal law have jurisdiction to prosecute crimes committed by and against Indians there.

Furthermore, Article VI of the US Constitution gives tribes a legal nation-to-nation relationship with the federal government and that has been official policy since 1832. Treaties signed by the US with the tribes are the same as treaties with other nations. Some major crimes on tribal territory come under federal jurisdiction, but most are dealt with in the tribal court system. Individual states have no authority on tribal lands — only the US Congress can change that, and only with tribal agreement.

Hence, based on the Constitution and technically 200 years of federal policy, Oklahoma had no authority to arrest or prosecute Manuel Castro-Huerta in 2015. That case decision today strengthens right-wing Oklahoma politicians’ opposition to McGirt v. Oklahoma two years ago, which reinforced the Supreme Court 1832 decision on sovereignty.

The 1832 decision, however, did not stop President Jackson or another state, Georgia, from force-marching 60 tribes east of the Mississippi River into Oklahoma and other western territories throughout the 1830s. It is widely known as the Trail of Tears. Thousands died along the way. They were all promised these new lands would be set aside for them to live in peace forever.

In recent decades only one-quarter of the US Supreme Court’s decisions have been in favor of tribes. Even when they win court cases, the laws are often ignored. As Native activist Ann Rogers said, “White gold seekers tore up the Black Hills in South Dakota in the 1800’s; hundreds of children were removed from families to government and church boarding schools — actually labor camps — from 1869 to the 1960s; tribal lands were decimated for mining uranium, fishing treaty rights destroyed, tribal land and water with oil pipelines contaminated. And now they want policing power on tribal land to arrest white criminals!”

Following the money, not humane law. One immediate impact of the Huerta ruling is utter confusion between federal, tribal, and state jurisdiction over crimes on tribal lands. Will tribal members face less protection and more abuse by police? Will sentences be less than in tribal courts? Tribes in Oklahoma have already received $62 million to support increased legal enforcement responsibility after the McGirt decision. Will that be withdrawn?

Oklahoma has spent $10 million on publicity to convince the non-Native public that they need state law enforcement protection from tribes, because tribal territory is claimed to be a “hotbed of crime and drugs.” Oklahoma has already filed 40 different pleas to overturn the McGirt ruling.

The state wants to enrich its coffers by taxing tribal businesses and land (that is, double-taxation) and to control access to natural resources and land usage. A primary goal, no doubt, would be overturning tribal environmental protections, so that corporations can drill, mine, frack, and run pipelines everywhere.

Congress could overrule the Castro-Huerta decision by passing laws, but that would only be a bump in the road for the current campaign to obliterate tribal sovereignty. In the long run, states’ rights politicians’ goals include taxing tribal enterprises to benefit state governments, erasing fishing and hunting rights, overturning tribal environmental laws, and stealing water and mineral resources. In essence the long-term goal is to assimilate Native people and do away with their culture and rights to control their resources.

Next session the Supreme Court will hear the Brackeen v. Haaland case, an attempt to overturn the Indian Child Welfare Act and break up families, steal tribal children, and erase culture based on the claim that tribes are not nations but races. The right-wing majority of the Supreme Court is pushing their agenda — a campaign of genocide on this continent’s earliest inhabitants. It will take determined, collaborative organizing among all civil and human rights activists and groups to defend Native sovereignty and stymie big-money moguls’ attacks on Indian Country.

This is the opposite of the bottom – up, horizontal organization, regarding native People and in general in USA, which the anarchists – the liberal social democrats – want of this at the moment conservative liberalist country with some severe authoritarian tendencies, although the system seen all in all and in general is relatively stable since the early 2000-s.
